Construction of a local treatment facility (LTF) – a large-scale engineering complex designed to ensure the environmentally safe operation of the upgraded highway – is underway on the section of Afanasovskoye Highway currently being reconstructed by VIS Group on the border between Moscow and the Moscow region.
The stormwater treatment system comprises three underground sections with a total area of 1,150 m². They will be capable of handling up to 840 m³ of water per day – a volume comparable to 28 standard railway tank cars. The LTF will collect and treat rainwater and snowmelt from the 2.7 km section of the highway undergoing reconstruction. The design incorporates a water retention and gradual discharge technology, preventing the existing storm drainage system from becoming overloaded, even during periods of heavy precipitation.
Currently, soil excavation and the bracing of the sheet-pile excavation wall have been completed; concrete base preparation is almost finished, and work on foundation laying and wall construction is in progress. Once commissioned, the local treatment facility will collect surface runoff, removing sand, suspended solids, petroleum products, and other contaminants before discharge. This will prevent pollutants from entering the environment.
Afanasovskoye Highway connects to the Mytishchi High-Speed Chord, a project built and operated by VIS Group under a concession agreement with the Moscow Region Government. Following the reconstruction, the section of the A-104 Moscow–Dmitrov–Dubna–Povedniki highway is being expanded from two lanes to four, and in some places, six. Preliminary traffic flow was launched on the road in July 2025. This has enabled efficient traffic distribution from the Chord to Dmitrovskoye Highway and reduced travel times for motorists.
The project entails not only upgrading the roadway but also creating modern engineering infrastructure, including local treatment facilities that meet current environmental standards. Additionally, three pedestrian overpasses have been built, and public transport stops are being upgraded.
