First elements of the central cofferdam of the Lena Bridge are being installed in their designed positions at the assembly site

29.01.2026. First elements of the central cofferdam of the Lena Bridge are being installed in their designed positions at the assembly site

Construction of the Lena Bridge in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) is proceeding around the clock, subject to weather conditions. Some work can be carried out even in sub-zero temperatures. Workshops and special shelters have been set up at the processing sites. Cofferdam assembly is one of the key tasks performed during the winter.

Bridge abutment No. 9 will become the central pylon of the Lena Bridge, which stands over 284 meters tall. To install it in the riverbed, pre-assembly of the steel structures of the vertical beams and cofferdam bottom is underway at process site No. 2, and work has begun on installing the first structures in their final positions.

The project calls for three cofferdams for the bridge’s three riverbed piers, which will support the bridge superstructures over the river using cable stays. Almost 10,000 steel structures will be required for the cofferdam assembly. This large-scale work is ongoing. Currently, the first cofferdam is fully assembled, pre-assembly of the vertical beams of the second (central) cofferdam is underway. It is approximately 40% complete, and the bottom of the third cofferdam has been assembled.

The Lena Bridge is one of the most complex infrastructure projects in modern Russia, and floating cofferdams will be used for the first time in Russian bridge construction. Thanks to the support of Russian President Vladimir Putin and government decisions, it has been included in the “Infrastructure for Life” national project.

The project is being implemented as a concession, with shared co-financing from the federal and republican budgets, as well as private investment. VIS Group, as the concessionaire, is responsible for the design. The project includes planning, attracting extra-budgetary funds, and constructing and operating the bridge. Since the project's inception, a total of 19.1 billion rubles have been allocated for the construction of the Lena Bridge, including 4.3 billion rubles from private investment by VIS Group and bank funds raised by the holding company. An additional 2.4 billion rubles are planned from the federal budget in 2026, which will allow the rapid pace of work to be maintained.

The project is being implemented under multi-stage oversight by the grantor, the Government of Yakutia; the financial partner, Sberbank; and the designers and experts from ROSDORNII, a leading research institute in the road sector.

This is not VIS Group ‘s first road and bridge project. Major transport concessions have already been implemented in the Khabarovsk Region and the Moscow Region – these include the Khabarovsk Bypass and the Mytishchi Chord. In Novosibirsk, a bridge crossing over the Ob River, which also uses a cable-stayed structure, opened to traffic in December of last year.
