The first drilling rig has started operations inside the cofferdam for the central pier of the bridge across the Lena River in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). This will be the largest pylon, standing 284.5 meters tall – comparable to a 90-story building. A total of 208 bored piles are planned for this structure, each with a diameter of 1.5 meters and a length of 27.1 meters. Constructing them will require over 10,000 m³ of concrete.
The cofferdam – measuring 46 meters in diameter and 17.3 meters in height – was transported into the river channel and set in its design position in the riverbed on July 17–18. After the interior was reinforced with rock fill, support frames were installed to accommodate heavy specialized machinery and ensure work safety. Drilling into the riverbed is being carried out through guide pipes positioned to correspond exactly to the layout of the pylon's future piles. All reinforcement cages for the bored piles are ready, and a second drilling rig is being prepared for transport to the cofferdam.
Construction of pile foundations for the Lena Bridge piers is also underway at the onshore work sites. To date, nearly 30% of the work – 268 out of 920 bored piles – has been concluded, with five drilling rigs currently in operation. Of the 26 piers, foundations for three on the left bank and eight on the right bank are fully complete. One pier, standing nearly 10 meters tall, has been fully erected, and plans are in place to finish two more piers by the end of the year.
The three-pylon cable-stayed Lena Bridge is a unique engineering structure for the Arctic climate zone. It is one of Russia's largest concession projects, funded through a combination of federal and regional budgets as well as non-budgetary sources. Private investment accounts for 47% of the construction phase funding. To date, the total investment volume has already exceeded RUB 28 billion.
The bridge crossing, spanning a total of 14.5 km, will establish the first-ever land-based link between Yakutia and Russia’s federal road network. It will facilitate the creation of a transport and logistics hub, integrating a railway line, river and air transport, as well as regional highways.
The project is being implemented under the “Infrastructure for Life” national project. VIS Group acts as the concessionaire, investor, and general contractor for the Lena Bridge, delivering the project on a turnkey basis. The Government of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) is the concession grantor.
