VIS Group completed the first stage of the river operation, which entailed the deployment of the second floating cofferdam for the construction of central support #9 of the Lena Bridge into the Lena River. The structure was moved approximately one kilometer through the water and was installed at the designated location, where it is currently being secured to the pile anchors.
“Many complex engineering challenges are still ahead, but each one brings us closer to implementing this project, which is of strategic importance for Yakutia and the entire Russian Far East,” said Aisen Nikolaev, Head of the Sakha Republic (Yakutia). On July 14, he reported on the project's progress to Russian President Vladimir Putin, clarifying that 26 billion rubles had already been invested in the project to date, of which 10 billion came from the investor, VIS Group. The total capital expenditure for the project exceeds 170 billion rubles.
Sixty-five people are involved in the river operation to deploy the cofferdam. It is the largest of the three cofferdams, designed for the central pylon and measuring 46.1 meters in diameter and 17.32 meters in height. Including the equipment installed inside, its total weight is approximately 4,000 tons. The cofferdam will be secured in place using six pile anchors. Their height is 26 meters, 11 of which are embedded in the riverbed. The pile anchors will prevent the cofferdam from shifting while it is being lowered to the bottom using the flooding method.
“The operation is unique in that, as soon as the cofferdam is placed in its design position, it will begin to flood. With a total cofferdam height of 17 meters, about 7 meters of the structure will remain above the river surface after flooding; the rest will be submerged. Flooding the cofferdam and equalizing the water level inside it with the river level will require approximately 12,500 m3 of water and will take 12-18 hours. Nine pumps with a capacity of 190 m3 per hour will supply water to the cofferdam,” explained Sergey Kozlovsky, Head of Corporate Communications at VIS Group.
Before the cofferdam's removal, specialists from the Lena Basin Administration completed a series of preparatory activities. Dredging operations, during which 82,000 m3 of soil were removed, were carried out at the installation site, along with a spatial scan of the river bottom that allows to assess its topography and ensure the safe execution of this complex technological operation.
“We are using several boats, heavy-duty water tractors from the Lena United River Shipping line, “Nilov” - a rig from the Yakutsk shipping company, and VIS Group's own river fleet for the operation. A total of 16 vessels are engaged in the construction of the Lena Bridge. Morbaza, a company with extensive experience in constructing large-scale marine and river hydraulic structures, was involved in the operation,’ said Andrey Suslov, Deputy Executive Director of the Eighth Concession Company (part of VIS Group).
The project is being implemented under a concession agreement between VIS Group and the Government of Yakutia as part of the “Infrastructure for Life” national project. The Group is acting as the investor, concessionaire, and general contractor for the construction of the Lena Bridge.
