Constructing the pile foundations for the supports of the bridge across the Lena River in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) is currently one of the largest-scale operations at the construction sites. Five drilling rigs are positioned simultaneously within cofferdams in the river channel, while others are operating on the right bank. In total, 316 out of 920 bored piles have been completed, amounting to over 30% of the total volume.
Twenty-three bored piles have been installed across two cofferdams, and specialists have assembled reinforcement cages for another 39 piles. The river channel section accounts for nearly half of all piles in the project. Constructing the bridge pylons. Which range from 194.5 to 284.5 meters in height, will require 412 piles, with some extending to depths exceeding 40 meters. This ensures the structures are securely anchored in the riverbed and capable of withstanding critical loads, even during ice drift periods.
To date, pile foundation work has been fully completed for 12 of the 26 supports specified in the project design. Foundations for three piers are ready on the left bank, and for nine on the right. Before the pier shafts are erected, static load tests are conducted on each one. Such tests are currently underway on Pier #15 on the right bank; specialized equipment is being used to apply a load exceeding 1,270 tons to verify the piles' load-bearing capacity.
The Lena Bridge will be the first bridge crossing over the Lena River in Yakutia. Its total length, including approach roads, will be 14.5 km, with the bridge span itself measuring 4.6 km. Once commissioned, it will provide the region with its first-ever year-round overland connection to the federal road network. The project is being implemented under a concession agreement and is part of the “Infrastructure for Life” national project. VIS Group is responsible for the entire project lifecycle: from securing investment and construction to the subsequent operation of the completed infrastructure. The Government of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) acts as the concession grantor.
